Objective: Chapter 1 In this chapter, Pearl is hesitant to tell her mother about her illness. She fears her reaction and believes her mother will spout Chinese mumbo jumbo on what she should be doing to keep well. When Aunt Helen threatens to tell Winnie if Pearl does not, Pearl is forced to make a decision. This lesson will explore Pearl's reasons for keeping her multiple sclerosis a secret from her mother.

1) Class Discussion: Pearl has had one major flare-up of MS in seven years, and the symptoms she has are fatigue and weakness in one leg. She has tried to tell her mother on several occasions, but her mother always interrupts her and Pearl has not persisted. Aunt Helen tells Pearl she is dying from a brain tumor and does not want Pearl's secret on her conscience. She threatens to tell Winnie, her best friend and business...
