Objective: Act 1, Scene 1 This scene is the perfect first scene as it sets the stage for the rest of the play. The objective of this lesson is to explore the possible foreshadowing that happens in this scene, and to discuss some of the possible outcomes.

1) Read aloud with the class the section where the Captain talks about the deteriorating values in Siam and the danger a single woman will find there. Have the students each write a short prediction about what this statement could be foreshadowing. Do you believe that Siam is really so bad? Why or why not? What evidence is there in the scene to support your belief? Allow some volunteers to read their ideas.
