Ferdinand Bardamu

The protagonist of the novel, this man served in the First World War as a messenger before being sent back to Paris suffering from a form of shell shock. His cynical attitudes and scathing criticism of every aspect of society forms the mainstay of the novel.

Robinson

This individual is the protagonist’s old wartime buddy who also operates as a form of alter-ego throughout the protagonist’s death. This character always appears to have little or no sense of morality, and willingly uses his friends and others around him to further his own greed.

Lola

This character is one of the first love's of the protagonist’s life. However, she later abandons him when she discovers he is a coward. She moves to wartime France in an effort to be nearer to the action.
