Objective

The objective of this lesson is to gain understanding of the use of symbols throughout the text and how symbolism relates to the characters' learning experiences.

Lesson

1) Have the class write a paragraph about a modern symbol of importance and why it is significant to the individual and the country as a whole. Be sure to describe the symbol in its entirety, including size, shape, color, and texture and why these characteristics may be important.

2) Separate the class into small groups and have them create a symbol that represents the entire group as well as each individual. While the group should have a team leader, each student should have creative input.

3) Have each group present their symbol in a five-minute talk in front of the class and explain its meaning in a short presentation. How does this symbol connect to the novel?
