Objective

Objective: The writing style is the way the author chooses to express a story. Writing styles vary in sentence structure, point of view, formality, informality, and other elements. Each element can contribute to the effectiveness of the author's chosen style for the story. In chapter 1, the author begins Jasmine's story using a first person point of view. The objective of this lesson is to learn about writing style.

1) Class Discussion: What is writing style? What factors can limit style choices? What are some style elements? What elements in chapter 1 are effective in telling the story? Be specific. How are they effective?

2) Small Groups: Have each small group discuss how different writing styles would affect the story. Do you feel the writer used the most effective style elements to introduce us to this story in chapter 1? Why or why not?
