Objective

Daphne du Maurier was an English author and playwright. Her novel "Rebecca" is popularly considered the masterpiece of her career, though other notable works include "The Scapegoat," "The House on the Strand," and "The Birds." This lesson discusses the author of "Jamaica Inn," Daphne du Maurier.

Lesson

1) Library research: Have the students research the author, Daphne du Maurier. Explore the other works she has written, as well as her personal background. Look at biographical information, interviews, and critical essays to gain information about her writing and where "Jamaica Inn" fits in with her other published works.

2) Presentation: Have pairs of students prepare presentations, using their research on Daphne du Maurier and her canon. Have each group read an excerpt from different novels written by Du Maurier during their presentation.
