Jack Maggs is a 1997 novel by author Peter Carey. Set in 1837 in London, the narrative is a reworking of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. Chapter 1 opens on Saturday, April 15, 1837, as a man in a red waistcoat arrives in London and checks in at the Golden Ox Inn. In this lesson, students will research authors Peter Carey and Charles Dickens and the novel Great Expectations, and will identify and analyze the narrative style and setting established in Chapters 1-3 of Jack Maggs.
