Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the power Marguerite's guardian has over her, and what is communicated about her lack of agency In Part I of Isola. Marguerite's guardian controls her wealth and her life. Nearly every major event in her life is controlled by someone else, especially her guardian.

Class Discussion: What decision does Roberval make about marriage for Marguerite when she is 13? Does she have a say in the decision? When is she told to move to the north tower? Does she have any input in that decision? What teachers does she have? Is she a part of discussions on who to hire? How are her daily life and her movements constrained by her guardian and her gender? Does Marguerite's guardian ever ask her what she wants to do? Does she have a choice of whether to go or not go...
