This object in the novel represents a type of talisman that may fend off many forms of evil. Chanel's mother, always tried her best to provide for her family, and when she passed away, her loss was deeply felt by everyone. The fact that Chanel and the kids had this object gave them some comfort.

Fort Greene

This place in the novel represents the Black middle-class residents in this area and how they live and how it affects Dasani's family every day. It is where the Auburn shelter is situated. In the 1960s, this area belonged to Black middle-class residents, and in the 1980s and 1990s, it saw a similar cultural renaissance to the Harlem Renaissance.
