Explanation of section breakdown: This novel follows multiple characters. Primarily, the chapter titles are simply the characters names. For purposes of clarity and to differentiate between the chapters, this Lesson Plan labels each character's chapters in order. For example, Jules's first chapter labeled Jules 1 starts the book. Jules 2, her second chapter begins on page 10, and so on and so forth throughout the novel.

Jules 1

• The novel opens with Jules's reflecting on learning about Nel's death.

• The chapter speaks directly to Nel.

• At first Jules is worried when police officers show up at her home, but then she is relieved to learn it was Nel and not "someone she cares about" (1).

• Jules is angry at Nel for bringing her back to their childhood home...
