Essay Topics
Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:
Essay Topic 1
Write an essay in which you explore the concept of trauma as it is discussed in the book. How and why do traumatic events (particularly those that transpired during Machado's abusive relationship) linger even years after they have happened? In what ways has Machado tried to heal from that trauma?
Essay Topic 2
Write an essay in which you explore how Machado's relationship with her woman in the Dream House effects her understanding of physical intimacy. Even once the relationship is over, Machado wonders whether she will ever be able to want or receive touch ever again. In your essay, explore Machado's point that "the body learns" in order to examine how trauma lives not only in the mind, but in the body even once it is over.
