Objective

Objective: The homosexual events in The Immoralist made it a racy and controversial novel for its era. By today's standards, the book is not so controversial. Today's lesson will focus on the author, Andre Gide. Students will learn about the author's life and how it relates to this story.

1) Small group activity: Break the class into groups of three or four, creating enough groups to research these topics: the author's childhood, education, writings, marriages and relationships, and prizes and awards. Have each group share their information with the class. Each group prepares its information to present to the class for discussion. Each group should make a handout for their classmates from the information they compile.
