The students will be able to understand point of view.

Lesson

Possible Activities:

• Using this opening scene with the villagers, have the students write a description of the events from the point of view of a Viet Cong soldier.

• Have the students discuss how this book would be different if written from the Viet Cong's point of view.

• When the soldiers come across the tunnel, explore with the students how things might be different they had sent a soldier down into the tunnel instead of throwing down two grenades. Have them rewrite this scene with this change.

Homework:

Provide the students with five or six rewritten statements from any source and have them identify from whose point of view they were written.

Challenge:

Provide the students with a passage from the book and have them rewrite it from a different point of view.
