This lesson will review the opening scenes presented in the Prologue and Chapter 1. Students will gain an understanding of the opening of the book as well as the use of these contrasting themes.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Engage the students in a discussion about the opening scene specifically the themes of academia and identity. Where does the book begin? Who are the main characters in the prologue? How are these characters described? What event takes place that may affect these characters later in the book? What event is going on in Chapter 1? Who are the main characters of Chapter 1? What is the feel or theme of the prologue and Chapter 1? How do these themes contrast or compare?
