Chapters I and II

• The epigraph of the novel contains two different quotes.
• One of the quotes is taken from W.B. Yeats’s famous poem entitled “Easter, 1916” and the other is an author’s note from the text of The Dead Girls.
• Jorge Ibarguengoitia includes a note at the beginning of The Dead Girls that states, “Some of the events described here are real. All of the characters are invented” (5).
• Chapter I begins on page 7.
• Five boys are making their way from the river to the canal.
• They have “their slingshots drawn for battle” (7) and they take turns carrying a pail of rocks that they will use for ammunition.
• The leader of the group is wearing red swim trunks, while the four boys trailing behind him are...
