Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 72))

Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Konga's act of courage and defiance in Part I, as well as Konga's place in the community. Konga is something of a leper or outcast in Kosawa; he used to be handsome and sought-after, but at some point he developed what are surely mental health problems like hearing voices and experiencing paranoia, and since then, he lives outdoors and is a literal untouchable. However, when Konga takes the key to the car the Pexton officials are using in Part I, he is the first villager in a long time to stand up to Pexton in any meaningful way, and the villagers rally around this act of defiance.
