Objective

Objective: Book 1: Chapter 1 The setting, the time and place in which a story occurs is established in book 1, chapter 1, of The House of Mirth. In some stories, the setting is extremely important to the story; in others, the setting is relatively unimportant. The objective of this lesson is to learn the setting of The House of Mirth and its impact, if any, on the plot.

1) Tasks, Ideas, Challenges, and Homework:

1) For class discussion: What is the setting of The House of Mirth? Why is this particular setting important to the events which occur in book 1, chapter 1? How does the setting help the reader understand the events which occur in book 1, chapter 1? Could book 1, chapter 1 have occurred in another place at another time? Why or why not? Does the setting change in book 1, chapter 1? If so, how?
