Objective

The Horse and His Boy is one of the most famous fantasy stories in English literature. In this lesson, students will explore the fantasy genre.

Lesson

1) Hold a class discussion about the fantasy genre. Ask students to provide examples of other fantasy stories. After five or ten minutes, ask students to identify what elements the different fantasy stories have in common.

2) Ask students to work in pairs to create the first chapter of a fantasy story. Encourage them to use their imaginations in creating the world for their story. Remind them that they don't need to know the ending, since they are only creating the beginning.

3) Encourage students to draw an illustration from their favorite fantasy story, whether it is a book, film, or television show. Have them write a caption for the picture.
