Essay Topic 1

Examine Portia's relationship with the Kelly family. Based on what Portia tells her father about them, does she feel like more than an employee? If so, do the Kellys treat her strictly as an employee, or as a friend? If there is friendship, is it one sided? Is it stronger with some of the family than others? What does this tell readers about Portia's character?

Describe the kind of relationship Mick Kelly has with her family, especially her mother. Why doesn't Mick confide in her parents about her dreams?
