Essay Topic 1

Marlow’s journey involves a number of obstacles. Pick one of these. How did it arise? What roots did it have? Who built upon it? What is its function and significance?

Essay Topic 2

Kurtz is the central character of the novel, though he appears only briefly. Describe what happened to Kurtz. What was he like, and what was his fate? How does he come into play in the book?

Essay Topic 3

Though the novel is rich in description, more of it is devoted to describing action than anything else. How does Conrad create an ‘action’ novel? Who are the most active characters, and what do they do? Why is this significant?
