Chapter 1

Introduction of main characters.

Lesson

1) The main characters of the novel are introduced in this chapter. Discuss with the students who these characters are including their character traits. Include Dr. Montague, Eleanor, Theo, and Luke. Have students discuss their motives for coming to Hill House.

2) Divide students into small groups. Have students define character traits. Have students list traits that could describe a character and have students discuss how a character's traits can influence the development of a plot. Have students discuss motivation, define it, and discuss how they can recognize a character's motivations through only a few sentences in a novel. Students could then present their discussions to the whole class.

Homework:

1) Have students write a short essay about Eleanor and how they believe her past will influence her time at Hill House.
