Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to set the stage for the book. Students will gain background knowledge of the poem the book is based on.

Lesson

1) Have students research the original Beowulf poem. When was it written? By whom? What is the poem about? What happens in the poem?

2) As a class work to put together an identification chart that can be hung in the room. This will help students remember character names, who they are related to, and what country they come from.

3) Discuss with the class the original poem. What type of structure does it have? Is there any sort of division of parts? What are the parts? How many parts? Why is it divided in such a manner? What is the tone of the poem? Does the tone change between each part? What can account for the missing sections of text?
