Possible Activities:

• Have the students write a paragraph justifying why Catherine feels the way she does about her parents.

• Conduct an oral debate on the issue of giving birth out of wedlock.

• Utilize Catherine's father's treatment of her as the basis for a discussion or writing assignment for the students. Have them justify why he is correct.

Homework:

Have the students write five sentences justifying why they should not have homework in high school.

Challenge:

Provide the students with a controversial topic related to their own lives (i.e. changing the driving age, a school rule that they dislike, etc..) Have them write several different justifications for or against the issue.
