Objective

Objective: The Good Person of Szechuan is a 1940s play written by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht. The aim of this lesson is to introduce the play and Bertolt Brecht's work.

1. Class discussion. Have the students heard of the play before? What do the students expect from the book? Why do they expect these things to happen?

2. Brainstorm Bertolt Brecht's past works with the students. Do his books share similar themes? Divide the students into pairs and assign them each a book to research. On their return, discuss what the students expect from The Good Person of Szechuan?

3. With the students look at the questions that Brecht asks in the opening chapter of the novel. Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down five questions Brecht poses in the opening chapter. After ten minutes, ask the students to swap their work with another...
