Lesson 1 (from Act 1, Scene 1)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to develop an understanding of how the stage setting applies to the characters in the play in Act 1, Scene 1.

Lesson

#1 Group Activity: Break the class into groups. Without looking at the book, have each group list the number of items they recall from having read the scene. Compare this to the list of items described in the play, then the long list of items on the set list (at the end of the play). Does the detail in these descriptions help create a mental picture of the space? What does this clutter and the condition of the equipment suggest about the old age home?

#2 Class Discussion: Discuss why is setting important. Are we informed by a person's surroundings? Can a person become influenced by the physical surroundings? Is that perhaps one cause of Fonsia's distress?
