Essay Topic 1
Evelyn has spent much of her adult life consumed with guilt over her mother's death. First, explain how Evelyn's mother died and the way that Evelyn coped with that death. Then, explain what Evelyn has to feel guilty about when remembering her mother's death. In your opinion, is this guilt rational? Why or why not? Finally, explain how Evelyn's mother's death has affected the way Evelyn views her own health and life.

When Ruth falls ill with cancer, it forces other characters reconsider their roles or relationship with her. Choose one character whose life changed drastically when Ruth became ill and describe that change. Then, compare and contrast that with the drastic changes another character had to undergo when Ruth became ill. Then, explain how Ruth's illness changed the town and how she became immortalized in death.

Throughout her life, Idgie has been known to tell wild, exaggerated stories. Choose at least two of Idgie's wild stories and describe them. In each of these two situations, what did Idgie get in return for telling her crazy stories? What insight do these wild stories give the reader in regards to Idgie's character?
