The We narrate Chapters 1 through 5, and they begin the novel by describing their entry into Ada's body while she is still a young child of three. They then awaken during a masquerade ceremony when a particular masquerader, kept on a leash by its master, dances with Ada and causes The We to awaken within Ada's body after many years of lying dormant. Collectively, The We are an ogbanje, a spirit present in Igbo ontology.
