· It was a chance impulse which she regrets, for it will have to be hidden from her family.

· Valeria writes about the Sunday she had made the purchase, two weeks previously.

· She went to the tobacconist's to buy cigarettes for her husband, Michele, and seeing the black notebook, she wanted it also.

· Though forbidden to sell anything but tobacco on Sundays, the tobacconist eventually agreed to sell her the notebook and told her to hide it under her coat.

· Valeria felt guilt and anxiety all the way home, where she then struggled to find a hiding place for the notebook.
