Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1: The Spell of the Fog)

Objective

After completing this lesson, the student will be able to explain why fog is so dangerous to people who are sailing on the ocean, or in fishing boats as is the case in Fog Magic. Better understanding why fog is so dangerous to this profession will help the reader to understand why it is so unusual that Greta liked the fog so much.

Lesson

1) Simulation - In this simulation the teacher should smear the lenses of a pair of glasses or safety goggles with petrolatum. Let each student try to navigate around the classroom or playground outside while wearing these glasses. This exercise will give students an idea how difficult it is to keep from safely moving about without bumping into things when their vision is obscured by something, like fog.
