Lesson 1 (from Prologue - Chapters 1-6)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to analyze the sources used in a non-fiction text and to determine the reliability of sources and possible biases in writing or reporting. Students have access to a broad range of information via the internet, social media, and television. It is important for students to think critically about the source of information, the motivation for writing, and the credibility of information sources.

Class Discussion: What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction? Is all non-fiction factual and credible? Are non-fiction writers biased? How can you determine if a writer is biased? How do you determine the credibility of an information source?
Group Activity: Have students read the information on the inside and outside of the book jacket and the Note to Readers before the Prologue. What information did you learn about the book and the author? On the board...
