Chapter 1 introduces the Vakeel family and their religious beliefs. This lesson will discuss the ways in which values and beliefs helped shape their lives.

Lesson

1. Classroom discussion: Nariman's life has been completely shaped by the fact that his family forced him to give up the woman he loved because she was not Parsi as he was. How has the arranged marriage affected Nariman's life? What do you think of the fact that he continues to dream about Lucy? Do you think Nariman has been as strict with his children as his parents were? Why or why not.

2. Group discussion. Divide the class into groups of four to five students. Ask each group to consider how Nariman's life might have been different had he chosen his own path instead of following that decided by his parents. Did following his parents' wishes make him stronger? Consider his treatment...
