Objective

Prologue: Silent Pictures

In this prologue, it becomes clear that the characters will eventually die as the story progresses. The objective of this lesson is for students to discuss the various deaths presented in the prologue of the novel and discuss how the story is affected when the reader already knows the outcome of the characters' lives.

Lesson

1.) Class Activity: As a class, create a list of characters that are presented as dead in the prologue of the novel. Whose death seems to be the most shocking to the reader? Why?

2.) Class Activity: As a class, compare / contrast the death of baby Ambrose with the death of baby Other Lily. What is the same about their deaths? What is different? Is there anything unexpected / surprising in this comparison?

3.) Class Debate: Do you think it ruins the suspense of the novel to know the characters end up...
