• NOTE: To stay consistent with the way the author refers to the characters, this Lesson Plan uses the term "Indian" instead of "Native American," as the author only ever refers to characters/heritage as Indian.

• This book was written in the past tense and from the first person perspective.

• In the Prologue, it was the summer of 1942 and a young Cherokee Indian named Cowney Sequoyah left his hometown of Cherokee North Carolina to work in Asheville at a hotel inn.

• Working on the property, Cowney found a curved bone and was enthralled by it. He could not tell what kind of creature it was from.
