Objective

Chapter 1

Students will be able to become familiar with the vocabulary used in the text. They will be able to activate their schema and provide motivation for reading the story. Throughout the story, the author uses vocabulary that may not be familiar to all students.

Lesson

1. Vocabulary Search -- Have the class scour the story for 10-15 minutes looking for words that they are unfamiliar with. After the students finish, pass around an overhead transparency sheet and have each student add words to the list. Display the overhead and ask the students to give a definition for the words. (i.e. if someone writes down prejudice, then ask the class if they know what prejudice means). If there are any words that the class does not know, then have the students look up those words for homework.
