Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 49))

Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Murata's descriptions of the abuse Natsuki suffers at the hands of her mother in Part I. Natsuki's mother is relentless in her emotional and, later, physical abuse of Natsuki, to the point that 11 year-old Natsuki harbors fantasies of being invisible in her own household and thinks of herself as the family "dumpster." At the same time, Natsuki's mother dotes on her younger sister, Kise, who is the obvious "golden child."

Lesson

Class Discussion: What does Natsuki think of her mother? How does Murata communicate the dynamic between Natsuki and her mother to the reader? What does Murata reveal to the reader about the reasons behind Natsuki's mother's abuse?
