Jamie, Claire, and Fergus come to North Carolina to witness the hanging of Gavin Hayes. Discuss criminal punishment and friendship as well as setting.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Jamie, Claire and Fergus go to North Carolina to witness the hanging of Jamie's friend, Gavin Hayes. Discuss this friendship and what it must mean to Jamie for him to attend the hanging.

2) Setting: Discuss the setting of these chapters of the novel. Discuss how the punishment of Gavin Hayes illustrates the difference of this setting as compared to modern North Carolina. Discuss the use of hanging as a type of execution.

3) Group Work: Divide students into groups. Ask each group to study the setting of the novel and discuss how the setting alerts the reader to the circumstances...
