1. Describe the opening scene of the Prologue, before Makak and the Corporal enter.

The opening scene shows a dancer, who comes and sits astride a drum. A Figure comes and stands behind the dancer, and they both move to the music. They then separate and dance toward cages on opposite sides of the stage. The Figure turns a disc around to show that it is now daytime.

2. What do you learn about Tigre and Souris in the Prologue?

Tigre and Souris are in prison for unknown reasons, but it is clear that they are friends. They are also comfortable with the Corporal, whom they tease and beg for food and drink.

3. What is your first impression of Makak?

The reader's first impression of Makak is that he is old and weak. He does not fight back at the Corporal and surrenders to his punishment to be imprisoned.
