• The novel begins in Chicago, just before Christmas in 1971.

• Russ Hildebrandt is a 47-year-old former Mennonite, but now a pastor of the First Reformed Church.

• Russ’s wife, Marion, wants a divorce.

• Russ is formerly from New York, but the Hildebrandt family current lives in New Prospect, Illinios.

• He has a son, Clem, coming home from college soon for the holidays.

• Russ' daughter, Becky, is popular, but is in the rebel stages as a 17-year-old high school senior teenager.

• Russ’s 14-year-old son, Perry, is selling drugs to seventh graders, but reflects that he wants to change to be a better person.

• There is a younger son, Judson, who is not mentioned until later.

• All of the Hildebrandt children want to be free of the restrictions of the family...
