Objective

Objective: Students will consider the author's use of characterization in Act I.

1) As a whole class, students will discuss the character of Lennie. Making a list on the board, students will list her qualities, and discuss the techniques that reveal these qualities. Students will discuss the effectiveness of these techniques as well.

2) In small groups, students will explore the character of any person in Act I. Searching the text for examples, groups will find support for their description of the character. Groups will share these descriptions aloud, noting the characterization techniques that have developed him or her.

3) In small groups, students will explore any one characterization technique in Act I. Using the text as evidence, groups will attempt to prove whether or not their chosen technique was an effective choice for characterization in the text.
