• The roommate had dropped out of Stanford in the middle of their freshman year with no explanation as to why she was leaving. 


• The rumor going around was that the roommate had gone to Virginia to care for her sick aunt. 


• The narrator had agreed to meet the roommate for coffee, though she was surprised given that the invite came out of nowhere. 


• Seeing Winnie made Ava think back to her college days; at Stanford was full of kids like her. 


• When they were roommates, Ava would often grow annoyed of Winnie – who was from China – with all of her questions...
