Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Janice and Martin are two of the most loyal characters in Confessions of a Shopaholic. They represent a special way of thinking about the world. It is because of them that Rebecca is able to become a success outside of her current profession. Explore the depths of loyalty within the context of these two characters. How do Janice and Martin help Rebecca throughout the course of the plot? Do they ever expect something in return for their loyalty? Would the plot of the story be the same without them? Explain your rationale by providing examples from the book.

Essay Topic 2

Rebecca often dreams of a fairytale ending. She frequently loses contact with reality, in favor of experiencing some imagined fantasy. By the end of Confessions of a Shopaholic, she has everything she could ever want. Write an essay that explores Rebecca's happy ending. Is her happiness likely to last? Does her relationship with Luke have a strong foundation? Will it endure the trials and tribulations to come? Is Rebecca likely to continue to have a successful career in finance? Why or why not? Provide examples from the novel to support your argument.

Essay Topic 3

Confessions of a Shopaholic is told from a first person perspective through its protagonist. Explain why this perspective is valuable to the tone of the story. Why would the author want to choose first person over third person? In what way is the story benefiting by being told through the eyes of Rebecca? Is the story more lighthearted or personal because of the way it is told? Reference the novel to support your argument.
