"Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady" by Florence King is a memoir about King's years with her grandmother who attempted to rear her as a Southern belle. King was academically gifted in her youth, and much of her story details her struggle to balance her education with the behavior expected of a lady. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book, will read the Prologue, and will research and discuss the author Florence King.

1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the students to the book and its author. "Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady" is a memoir by Florence King which describes the author's youth as a young woman growing up in the South through the 1940s and 1950s.
