The Country Stories

• "Barn Burning" is the story of a man named Abner who is accused of ruining the crops of a farmer named de Spain. In retaliation, Abner decides to burn down de Spain's farm.

• Abner's son, Sarty, learns of his father's plan and warns de Spain. He hears gunshots come from the farm and knows that his father has been shot. He turns around and walks toward the woods, away from the tragedy.

• "Shingles for the Lord" is a story about Res Grier, a roofer. He is working on replacing the shingles in the town church and is indebted to the other men for falling behind task. He promises to pay them back for their wasted time with a prize hound dog.
