The objective is to acquaint the student with the historical background of this novel, which is partly set during the Indian Partition of 1947.

Class Activity: Discuss the effect independence has on the people of a country, covering 1) the attitude of the population, setting up a new economic structure, constitution, form of government, election of leaders, diplomacy with other countries, etc.

Discuss how independence for a country which has been under the rule of another entity for many years can be a blessing and a curse.

Assignment: By searching at the library or the Internet, research the summer of 1947, where Chapter 2 of this novel is set, when India received independence from Britain. Choose one of these subjects to write about, with respect to that event:

1. Religious differences within India

2. The creation of Pakistan

3. The British Empire
