Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)
Objective
Thorby is unaccustomed to kindness and as a result he cries himself to sleep holding onto Baslim. The objective of this lesson is to look at kindness and its effect.
Lesson
1) Discussion: Have the class discuss what kindness means. Have the class different ways that kindness is shown on a daily basis.
2) Classwork: Give the students 3-5 different types of characters. They can be from literature, history or simply a generalized title or person such as a movie star or invalid. Have the students write down each of the characters and explain the differences that kindnesses would be viewed by them. A rich lady as compared to a poor single mother would need different kindnesses. Have the students explain how these characters' views would differ from Thorby's.
3) Homework: Ask the students to find another literary work in which an act of kindness is pivotal to the...
