1) Class review: What does "characterize" mean? When readers characterize a character, they look at the character's ideas, actions and other characters' reactions to them to discover more about the character. To characterize Henry Temple, we should look at instances that could explain his character to us. What instances have we seen his involvement? Possible instances include:

a) Bothered by his son wanting to duel for his situation enough to go into a three-week delirium.

b) Will not marry for money.

c) Lives cheaply until his debt is paid.

d) Works to get Eldridge out of debtor's prison because he cares about the story and Lucy.
