Chapters 1 & 2

Ellie is in her tent during a summer storm.

She is part of a group of five teenagers who are living in a hidden valley named "Hell."

Ellie recalls an argument with Kevin when others mention a plan to attack the army that's invaded their country. When Kevin says he doesn't think it's a good idea, Ellie basically accuses him of being scared which has put a strain on the relationships between the five.

Lee decides he's going out to attack the enemy and Ellie knows it's partly because he needs action to help deal with the grief of losing his parents.

Homer contacts Colonel Finley who says they can't get the teens out of the country at the moment but not to give up hope.

There is still tension between Kevin and Ellie as they set out but they encounter a wombat and Ellie winds up...
