Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 through 5)

Objective

In Chapter 1, Bruce and two of his Motilone Indian friends are threatened by Humberto Abril. Abril has been in conflict with the Indians over land. The objective of this lesson is to discuss threats.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: Why does Abril come to speak with Bruce? What does he believe is his? Why does Abril believe the land belongs to him? How does Abril react emotionally when Bruce and the Indians refuse to be drawn into a conflict? How does Abril react physically? What does Abril scream at them? What does he threaten to do?

2) Partner discussion: Divide the class into groups of 2-3. When Bobby speaks to Abril, how does he speak to him? Is he emotional or frustrated? What precautions do Bobby, Ayaboquina, and Bruce decide to implement because of the threats? What does Bobby say is the best thing to do about Abril's threats...
