This book is a graphic novel. The objective of this lesson will be to analyze this interesting genre of literature, and to discuss why the author would have chose to present these stories and their messages in a genre of this nature.

Lesson

1) Introduction of Genre: Introduce to the class the genre of the graphic novel. Explain how this kind of novel differs from a traditional novel. Show the students some examples of other graphic novels that are popular and critically acclaimed like this novel. Answer any questions that the students may have about this fairly new kind of piece of literature.

2) Small Group Activity: Split the class into groups and assign each group one of the images included in the first chapter of this book. Have each group study their image and work together to write a short essay about what this image adds...
