Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Discuss the relationship between Kovic and his parents, before during and after his military service. Did either side overreact or was each person as tolerant and understanding as possible? How did the parent/child relationship change as Kovic began to return to society as a regular citizen? What do you think their relationship might be like today?

How might you feel in a similar situation? Explain.

Essay Topic 2

Do you think about the general was really indifferent to the situation or was attempting to be professional and appropriately sympathetic? Discuss how you might feel in the same situation. Examine it from both sides. Also examine military protocol regarding the visiting of soldiers and the meting out of commendations and awards during peace time and during war time. What changes?

Essay Topic 3

What do you think about Kovic's opinion on why he might have been injured? Do you believe that there should be punishment for acts of violence? If so, how would the punishment be decided and meted out? Explain. Also investigate Kovic's wish to be injured as penance for the debacle that took place in the Vietnamese village. If given the opportunity to live it over again, do you think Kovic would have made the same choices? Explain.
